It took years to let go of my bias against American Sign Language and even longer to understand what accessible language means. My sights had been set on technology. As the decades passed, I began to realize the promise my mother had sold me on as a kid, a stem cell research cure, probably wasn’t going to happen in my lifetime. And I realized something else: me without hearing aids was my natural state. Taking my hearing aids out felt like home; the place I was always waiting to get back to. I did not want to be “cured.” I just wanted to be me.
